2019 awards eligibility

It turns out that while I was researching and writing up my big awards explainer post last week, Mother of Invention editor (and excellent writer in her own right) Rivqa Rafael was writing her own post listing all the awards MoI is currently eligible for. This led me to the double realisation that a) burying my own eligibility in the middle of my big explainer post was probably counter-productive and b) there’s a whole ‘nother award I didn’t even know about that I should have included.

I still have a lot to learn about this “writer” gig…

So! To I’m going to do a write-up shortly of the Locus Award, and make a second post this week covering that and the Hugos (expanded and split out from last week’s post to prevent it getting just too unwieldy). And in the meantime, separated out from the original post and now with added Locus, here is my list of eligible works for the 2019 awards:

Hugo Awards

Works can be nominated by anyone with a membership or supporting membership to the previous or current Worldcon, i.e. San Jose in 2018 or Dublin in 2019. Anyone with a membership or supporting membership to the current Worldcon (Dublin) can vote.

Nomination deadline: 15th March. Links to an online nomination system will be supplied by email to those eligible.

If you’re a fan of my writing (eeeeeee!) and eligible to nominate, relevant eligible works are:

  • Best Short Story – ‘Arguing With People on the Internet’, E. H. Mann, in Mother of Invention, Twelfth Planet Press

Sadly, unlike the Ditmar, the Hugo doesn’t have a category for anthologies, so you can’t nominate Mother of Invention itself, nor Fabled Journey III. And ‘The Miller’s Daughter’, the story published in Fabled Journey III, is ineligible since it was previously published in 2017.

Ditmar Awards

Anyone active in SF fandom can nominate works, members of Continuum 15 can vote. See here for a longer explanation.

Nomination deadline: 24th March. Nominate here.

Relevant eligible works are:

  • Best Short Story – ‘Arguing With People on the Internet’, E. H. Mann, in Mother of Invention, Twelfth Planet Press
  • Best Collected Work – Mother of Invention, Rivqa Rafael and Tansy Rayner Roberts, Twelfth Planet Press

Fabled Journey III is still ineligible since it is not Australian.

Locus Awards

Nominations not required, anyone can vote (but Locus Magazine subscribers’ votes are counted twice).

Voting deadline: 15th April. Vote here.

Relevant eligible works are:

  • Best Short Story (write-in) – ‘Arguing With People on the Internet’, E. H. Mann (Mother of Invention)
  • Best Anthology – Mother of Invention, Rivqa Rafael and Tansy Rayner Roberts eds. (Twelfth Planet)
  • Best Anthology (write-in) – Fabled Journey III, Daniel Beazley ed. (Remastered Words)

I realise I have the proverbial whelk’s chance in a supernova at receiving an award for my very first pro-published story, but even to be nominated (let alone shortlisted) would be an amazing experience. Such is the power of awards on emerging authors with self-esteem issues!
